Jazz Beat Grizzlies, 118-108

AK had his total game going in the first half tonight. He was bringing the energy, and superb court vision.

The blocked shot in the 1st quarter, the touch pass to Millsap in the 2nd quarter, followed almost immediately by another great pass as Millsap cut down the lane. Then, next possession, cutting to the basket to take the great pass from Millsap and the dunk. It's great to see him pick up his game. Let's hope it continues.

Oh, and let me also mention that I'd like to have Derek Fisher's arms. That guy is ripped.

Mailman vs. Paperboy

So just how good is Paul Millsap, minute for minute?? I wanted to look at whether Millsap is living up to his nickname as "The Paperboy" -- a play off of "The Mailman" of course. To do so, I decided to compare Millsap's rookie year with that of Karl's. One immediate problem though: Karl Malone was a starter as a rookie, and Millsap is coming off the bench. Thus, I used a multiplier of 1.71 to project Millsap's stats at a minute-to-minute equivalency with Malone's. Below you can see my chart of how Millsap stacks up. You'll see that although Malone was a more prolific scorer and dished out more assists, Millsap is practically his equal when it comes to Rebounding and steals, and is superior when it comes to blocks.
Now consider:
1. When playing half the minutes (and playing sporadically) it is more difficult to get into the flow of a game, and get into a rhythm.
2. Millsap was a 2nd round draft pick
3. The Jazz don't run any plays for him
4. Millsap's FG% as a rookie is superior: 52.5% vs. 49.6%

The conclusion is clear: Minute for minute, Millsap is "delivering" the goods beyond almost anyone's hopes. Gotta like that.

D-Will puts up star numbers

At the all-star break, I decided to look at the numbers of Deron Williams, and see how they compared to other NBA star guards. Most importantly, I wanted to compare his numbers with Jason Kidd and Steve Nash. You'll see I added a couple of other stars. I gave Nash the benefit of the doubt -- using his break out year. In other words, Nash was getting far more comparable playing time at year 3 than at year 2. As you look closely you'll see that D-Will is putting up better numbers than most. He's putting up bona-fide star numbers through the break in his Sophomore stint. You can't help but be excited about his future.
